Don't read old entries... Aug. 31st, 2006 @ 03:01 am
That's right, I suggest you don't go back and read your old blog/journal entries. I made that mistake tonight. Insomnia has taken me over tonight for whatever reason and I didn't know what else to do. It's quite disappointing to go back and read things you wrote less than two years ago and think how immature (sp?) it sounds. So, if you read my entries back in the day and thought, "Wow, this guy is like a little child," I understand what you're saying. On the bright side, at least it shows I'm growing, eh?

Pure Nerd
91 % Nerd, 34% Geek, 34% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

A space propulsion device to go 50 times the speed of light (from our perspective) in the next five years? Hmmm....

And, here's the paper they're referencing in the article.
» A system that is 100% SAFE and ENDORSED by DOCTORS!
I find it funny that this spam-mail website offers "A system that is 100% SAFE and ENDORSED by DOCTORS!" and also a way to get a doctorate degree "ONLINE IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS". I wonder where this doctor whom is endorsing their product got his degree?
» Truck Rental Issues
Well, I never realized how much prices of rental moving trucks could change w/in two days. Earlier this week, I was comparison-shopping for the best-priced moving truck rental to find that Penske had a great price compared to UHaul for my adventure back to W Laf. I couldn't lock in the quote I received that day because I needed to confirm my last day co-oping here.

I confirmed the date today (was the same as I had though when I was quoted) and went back to re-receive the quote from Penske only to find the rental had gone from $700 to $1000. This was very disappointing as, now, UHaul had a better price than them and I was excited to be able to try out a different company and support the underdog in the industry.

I spoked w/ one of the Penske reps and was very surprised that she made no offer for any sort of discount or anything, even when I told her that because of this, I would be choosing UHaul over Penske. I mean, they obviously have no *obligation* to give me anything other than the current quote price for a truck, but the thing that separates companies is not what they do that they are required to do, but what they do that they are not required to do.

I'm not so much upset about Penske as I am surprised about their unwillingness to do ANYthing to make their rental sound more appealing than simply switching to UHaul. Oh well, guess I'll go with UHaul again.

And for all of you interested in the conversation I had w/ Penske, here it is (the double-letters at the beginning of some of my statements is due to a bug in their chat software... I don't stutter... I don't think... at least when I chat):

Please hold for the next available representative...
You have been connected to Jena .
Jena : Hi Wesley. How may I assist you?
Wesley Allen: I was checking rental rates this past week for a move in december and found the pricing very affordable...
Wesley Allen: I I just verified the date I would be able to move and then came back to the site only to find the price to rise 300 dollars...
Wesley Allen: nnow it seems as though uhaul's pricing is better than penske's ..
Wesley Allen: which is dissappointing because I had heard good things about penske and was very interested in trying you out
Wesley Allen: iis there any way I can get a quote back from a few days ago?
Jena : Unfortunately, I don't have the access or the authority to honor the previous rate. I do apologize.
Wesley Allen: even losing a customer to uhaul?
Jena : are you at all flexible with your move date?
Wesley Allen: w/in a few days
Jena : Wesley, I don't even have access to the rates to help you with your quote, I can only recommend that you enter a few different dates into your quote page to see if that will generate a lower rate for your move.
Wesley Allen: ok, thanks for your help
Jena : Our rates are based on the availability of rentals on any given date you choose.
Jena : You're more than welcome,
Wesley Allen: I've entered dates w/in a range of 3 months and received the same rate each time
Wesley Allen: is there something wrong w/ what I am doing then maybe?
Jena : Is there a reason you didn't lock in the lower rate you were quoted? No our rates do change frequently.
Wesley Allen: I was at the time looking around for the best deal but was not positive about the moving date, so I didn't want to lock in a date I wasn't positive about
Jena : It does state that on our web site that the rate quoted is subject to change until a confirmed reservation is made. I do wish there was something more I could do for you.
Jena : Penske offers the exclusive Rate Protection Plus. If you find our rates for your move drop lower than the price you reserved, we will honor the lower rates. You can also postpone your date twice without your rates being affected. However, if you must change to an earlier pick up date, you will be subject to the current rates. And you can cancel your reservation up to 48 hours prior to the pick up date without a cancellation fee.
Jena : The rates could very well lower by that time.
Wesley Allen: I understand, thank you for your help
